The Politics of San Francisco Drinking Water

The region's water source is 165 miles from San Francisco, up in Yosemite National Park. In order to have achieved that feat, and all the others that preceded it, San Francisco had to play hardball politics in the state, and far beyond.

As water becomes an ever more precious resource around the world, San Francisco needs to learn more about its native water resources. Our research into local water history has turned up the surprising fact that year-round water sources right within San Francisco city limits sit untapped and have for decades, since most wells were abandoned.

Learn more about the geography and social history of San Francisco water from this article by Joel Pomerantz.
