Outside the Tourist Zones
an 8-hour exploration

We use our feet and public transit to get under the skin of half a dozen neighborhoods and microclimates. With cool participatory activities, presentations, and conversations with locals, you'll become the world's leading expert on local ecology and social history.

No doubt about it. This is the best way to get to know San Francisco whether you're a visitor, Bay Area local, or lost alien. Based on his twenty years of tour-giving, our founder and lead guide, Joel Pomerantz, will reveal the hidden threads that hold "Everybody's Favorite City" together.

You'll see a wide sampling of the city. But this is more than a look-see tour. Your day will pass far too fast in this series of walks interspersed with rests and unusual participatory activities. There'll be presentations, lunch, and conversations with locals too!

Itinerary varies, but includes a very short time downtown plus a deeper look at various outlying neighborhoods, public art, some little known view points, and a greatest hits sampling from our more specialized tours. Bring your requests too. We'll see if we can work them in.

You'll learn (and maybe argue about) how San Francisco is different, how the city came to be what it is today, and why we love this city so much. You'll get a sense for local ecology (future & past), topography (up & down), and radical politics (left & right), along with the cultural dilemmas, economic boom history, earthquake geology, and even a little architecture.

But most importantly, you'll have a blast! We'll bring you places you'd never find on your own and places you'll remember for eons (two or more eons guaranteed).

Inspired by the extremely popular Brewer's Berlin (Germany) 8-hour walking tours in English, this tour begins at 10:30 a.m. and goes all day (usually until about 6:30).

Approximately eight hours
