Current Scheduled Tours (& Talks)
Contact Joel if you want a custom tour, or a tour on a day not listed.
Please RSVP to join a tour. Group size is 5 to 12 people for long tours, 5 to 20 people for the Wiggle tour. If the tour is less than a day away, call! Serious rain cancels; call to be sure.
June 24 THURSDAY 7:30pm Talk at the Randall Museum: Historic Watercourses—Focus on the Wiggle and Panhandle Natural History Series at the Randall • Free, no RSVP needed. The Lower Haight once had lakes and streams. The valley had been the site of Spanish Mission trails and Ohlone trails before. Its zigzag of streets is known as the Wiggle by today's bicyclists avoiding hills. Come glimpse the past and future of this fascinating urban valley.
July 1 THURSDAY 6–8pm Walk the Wiggle • Before bikes were invented, the Wiggle was a foot trail to avoid these same hills. Change the way you see the landscape as we talk about everything from art and bike politics to floods, lakes and native societies. A quintessential mix of Thinkwalks themes. RSVP. Meet at Oasis Cafe, corner of Divisadero and McAllister. Free. Donations encouraged.
July 10 SATURDAY 11–1:30 Outside Lands Bike Cruise • Before cars existed, Golden Gate Park was created as an escape from urban pressures. Instead, it turned into a test tube for the cultural shift from horses and coal gas balloons to bicycles and motor-carriages, from the spectacle of the "Gilded Age" robber barons to a literal refuge for refugees. RSVP. Meet at the Baker Street end of the Panhandle. $10 to $40 sliding scale donation.
September 22 WEDNESDAY 7:30pm Q&A at Workspace: Sewer History and the Future of SF Sewer Design • Free, no RSVP needed, but get in touch if you like. Joel will be on a panel with other water, sewer and flow experts to answer your questions about SF's Sewer design. This is a nerdy prelude to the Sewer History bike ride on September 25th.
Workspace is at 17th & Folsom (2150 Folsom).
September 25 SATURDAY 2–4:30pm Sewer History Bike ride led by Joel and other water, sewer and flow experts. Free, no RSVP needed, but get in touch if you like. Details TBA.
